NPR Audio: U.S. Troops In Baghdad Make Fishing A Tradition

by Anne Garrels

While U.S. troops in Iraq spend much of their time searching for high level insurgents, some soldiers at Baghdad's Camp Victory try to catch another type of "big one." They fish in the lakes surrounding Saddam Hussein's palaces. After five years, it's become a tradition — soldiers on their way out hand fishing rods to newcomers.

Missouri Man Finds Ancient Fish Hook

McBaine, Mo. - A man searching for Indian artifacts with his sons, aged 11 and 6, stumbled upon a find of a lifetime along the gravel bars of the Missouri River this past month. He knew instantly what it was, a Fish hook, but didnt know until closer examination and a few exhillerating seconds that it was actually an ancient bone hook. Bone hooks usually do not last long exposed to the elements and must have been preserved in the silt along the rivers edge. The hook cannot be carbon dated without ruining it, so only an educated guess can be made to as the age of the hook - anywhere from 300 to 1200 yrs old. What sets this bone hook apart is not only its quality, but also its size, It is as large as a mans palm and could be that way because it is infact very old, when the fish in the area targeted were of a size that would dictate such a large hook.

Mustad has an interesting article on ancient hooks that you can view here.
