No Motor Zone - Banana River
04/24/08 2:57 PM
Terry
Took the father in law out to the No Motor Zone on the Banana River for some Florida flats canoe fishing. Fished with little action from 9am until about 10:30 when the mullet began running. The usual hot spot hugging the base shore where the reds usually are was out of the question because of 2 annoyances.

First some dipshit in an airboat apparently didn't get the memo about no motors in the no motor zone as he apparently felt it was his duty to simultaneously haul ass up and down the shore and eat shit at the same time. It was amazing, I had never seen a man eat feces while operating a boat at the same time. Crazy!

The other problem was puffer fish, the Urkel of the sea, chewing up Berkleys like there was no tomorrow. I finally hooked one, confirmed it was their doing, released him and we moved closer to the middle of the No Motor Zone. Right about 11am I got lit up in rapid succession with Spotted Trout. Blam! 10 incher. Blam! 16 incher. Wablam! Another about 12 inches. I kept the slot sized one (I usually catch and release but I was feeling hungry) and gently returned the runts to the water to fight another day.

Around 1pm the winds picked up and made the water choppy so we headed in. Ed didn't catch anything unfortunately, but he got to see a porpoise, dozens of sting rays, and me catching a puffer and 3 trout. Sure beat working!
